Keep the name
The Irish Examiner  (The Dingle Letters)
4/22/2006
AS an American with deep roots in Ireland who visits the old country every year, I was astounded to hear of an effort by Minister Eamon Ó Cuiv to strike the name of Dingle from the map.

Dingle is a special town known to me and numerous friends for its beauty and the warmth of its people. Why any minister should wish to delete the name is incomprehensible to me.

Many of my Irish friends speak Gaelic, yet have no problem in calling this beautiful place Dingle.

An old saying in America states that ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’.

Why anyone would want to push such a change makes no sense as the people will still call it Dingle. I fervently hope that this foolish venture will be discarded. The name Dingle will always be associated with this beautiful place.
